Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

  • The hate u give

Interesting because it gives the usual story of police violence against black youth from the black perspective.
  • Great Book but people’s rude comments need to stop

    By doctor mcdreamy cupcakes
@VegitoHaze, you wouldn’t know about being a black woman in the 21st century if you aren’t black. Have you ever been stared down at every store you walk into just because you’re black. People always think that black people are thugs who steal things and that’s a stereotype that needs to be disintegrated. Not all black people are like that and before you part your lips to say something else about black women, you think what it’s actually like for us and think what it’s like in our shoes.

  • Brought me to tears

    By Chelsey Wireko
This book is so good! I cried tears of joy and tears of sadness. I’ve never been moved so much in my life. Next I wanna watch the movie cuz I read the book first:) I totally recommend this book to any age group. Even though it does have bad words it’s very empowering and can teach multiple people a lesson or two or fifty.

  • A true masterpiece

This book is definitely one of my favorites now! It was so touching, fun, and true. When you are reading it you feel like you there with the characters and you were in touch with them. Sometimes you even feel like you are the characters or you connect to them somehow. Very intriguing, a page turner, honest, and satisfying. Trust me your money will not be wasted! I bought this amazing book and I read it about six times already so definitely buy it! ( it could also make a great gift! )
  • 👏🏻All 👏🏻Lives 👏🏻Matter 👏🏻

    By BenShapiroLordAndSavior
All Lives Matter, also police officers aren’t bad at all, sure they make mistakes at times, but they’re not villains, they help us and keep our community safe, a police officer would never shoot someone if they put their hands in their car, maybe tase them but never shoot, unless it’s one of those idiotic police officers that have no brains, but other than that they are hero’s to many, this just makes me sad that a few bad police officers are making very great and admirable police officers look bad 😔
